George Lopez
George Lopez is a guy who has made lemonade from lemons at every turn. Since he became the plant manager at an L.A. airplane parts factory, George has handled a complicated and tumultuous job including mergers, vandals and even a Presidential visit -- with his sense of humor intact. Though his affable and loyal friend and leader, Ernie (Valente Rodriguez), and former compadres on the floor consider him a buddy, they continue to rib him and have their fun with his new found position of power. Dealing with his tough and acerbic but loving mother, Benny (Belita Moreno), while sifting through her vast assortment of lies about his childhood, and maintaining a civil relationship presents a constant challenge, both at work and at home. Fortunately George's devoted wife, Angie (Constance Marie), possesses the patience of a saint and copes surprisingly well with Benny's questionable behavior and insensitive wisecracks, and with George's freewheeling approach to parenthood. George runs into his aunt at the store and finds out that Benny has been lying to him for over 30 years and that his father is alive and is living in California.
George quickly learns the meaning of company loyalty when his bosses ask him to pitch in on the assembly line and he's offered a job by a competitor with ulterior motives. Meanwhile, Carmen has to choose whether she wants to keep her best friend Toby or be part of the in-crowd.
George goes into denial when Max is thought to have dyslexia, and things only get worse when Angie suggests he may have it as well. Meanwhile, Ernie leaves home and moves in with George and Angie and takes on the job of minding his girlfriends kids while she enjoys life.
As George gets ready for Halloween, Carmen falls into a depression after her best friend, Toby, moves away. After George 'letting Carmen find her own way' doesn't work, Angie gets her on the cheerleader team so she can make new friends.
George pushes Max to be better in baseball for his team's upcoming game; but in the process, Max accidentally ruins George's Steve Garvey autographed baseball.
Amy, the new PTA secretary, is charged with keeping track of candy sales when the school tries to raise funds so the students can attend a space-shuttle launch in Florida. With Amy's daughter and George's son in the same class, the parents engage in competition for sales among the ranks at the factory. But when Max fails to make the quota, the only thing that is launched is a war of words between George and the adults.
George and Angie never had a dance at their wedding so Angie prepares to have one now; except to calm her nerves before the dance, she has a few too many drinks and can't remember it the next morning.
George and Angie worry that Carmen's planning to have sex with a boy from school after her breasts develop and she comes home with a hickey.
George thinks he's found his real father when he meets one of Benny's coworkers that she supposedly slept with 35 years ago.
Angie turns the house upside-down when she takes on too many charities.
When Angie's parents, Vic and Emilina, visit for Christmas, George thinks they still believe he's not good enough for their daughter. But George shows he can take care of his family without their help and battles with Vic for the best Christmas.
Benny's bathroom is falling apart and Angie tries to convince George if he fixes it up for her, she'll be grateful to him for once in his life.
The family finds out that Benny's estranged brother Joe is dying. George and Angie convince Benny to reconcile with Uncle Joe, but Benny's more interested in getting Joe's Super Bowl tickets. Meanwhile, since Benny never taught George how to cope with death when he was younger, he has difficulty attending the funeral.
George and Angie confront the lies that began their relationship.
After Carmen breaks up with her boyfriend Adam, he spreads nasty rumors about her around school. With Carmen's reputation jeopardized, George and Angie step in to repair the damage. But the school counselor is a haunting figure from George's past who will not right the wrong - prompting Carmen to takes matters into her own hands.
When Carmen gets into private school, George and Angie decide to take out a loan to pay for the tuition. But a bad credit report finds George in poor financial shape. Thinking that someone has stolen his identity, George tracks down another George Lopez. But when the two men meet, they learn that they share more than a name; their social-security numbers and birth certificates are identical. Oh, and they have one more thing in common - their father.
George arranges for Angie's father Vic and sister Gloria to come to her birthday celebration as a surprise. Upset about her upcoming divorce and jealous of her sister's marriage to a good man, Gloria makes an inappropriate advance towards George--and Max witnesses it.
The airplane parts factory where George works is under consideration by the federal government for more business. Afraid that a certain employee's ethnic background will hinder the company's chances of getting the contract, George's boss orders him to demote the worker. George must decide whether or not to jeopardize his career by being ethical. Meanwhile, Max acquired "a wife" - his friend Allison.
Benny tries to turn a stumble at work into a huge a workman's compensation claim.
Angie invites Marisol to stay with them when her ex-boyfriend Junior harasses her at work, but she and George both come to regret that decision when Marisol and Carmen sneak out to confront Junior.
When George over-reacts to an incident between Max and Carmen, he is forced to re-evaluate his relationship with his daughter.
George embellishes on Ernie's work record to keep him from getting fired, and instead Ernie is elected the new team leader. Ernie's confident he can get the job done but George is stuck doing both their work.
Max and Ricky set off a bottle rocket and accidentally burn down the garage, which had $17,000 of Angie's beauty supplies in it; when George can't get a loan, Benny calls up Manny's new wife for help.
When George's father Manny sends him a check for $20,000 to pay off his debt, George takes the family on a trip to Phoenix to meet his father for the first time in 36 years; however, he punches him and storms out.
