A police officer is sent to a remote island off Scotland to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a young girl after receiving a letter asking for is help. On his arrival Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) comes across a very close knit community who don’t seem to be happy at his intrusion. His attempts to locate the young girl are frustrated as the villagers refuse to acknowledge that anyone has disappeared. Things take a turn for the worst when he becomes to realise that the islands inhabitants belong to some type of pagan cult headed by the women folk and his investigation turns out to be a lot more sinister than he could ever have imagined.
